Changes at County Jail in 2017
The County of San Luis Obispo completed a major project in 2017 that helps to reduce overcrowding at County Jail. The new women’s facility, called the “Kansas Jail,” was completed in March 2017 and female inmates began occupying it in April. This new addition, which is located adjacent to the main jail, has 196 beds and will provide space for programs to better prepare inmates for release. The entire jail now operates with a new state-of-the-art security system, adding 150 new cameras and a personal duress system, which enhances the safety of all staff and inmates.
The County also began construction on a new jail medical building shortly after moving inmates and staff into the new Kansas Jail. Construction began with the demolition of the old Women’s Jail and will result in a new 8,000-square-feet facility that will provide space to better serve inmates with mental health, medical, and dental needs, as well as provide more programs and space for the entire jail population.
The project has been under construction for three and a half years and is approximately 95% complete. This project not only enhances the housing facilities for female inmates, but it also improves the security system for County Jail and provides additional space for rehabilitation programs, such as counseling and education.
