Sheriff Invests in New Cadet Training

Picture
The Sheriff’s Office will be putting more deputies on the streets in the coming months and years thanks to investments by the Sheriff’s Office in 2017. Nine Deputy Sheriff Cadets – four women and five men – were hired by the Sheriff’s Office to attend an entry law enforcement academy in 2017. Some attended the Ventura County Academy and others the Allan Hancock Academy in Santa Maria.

While gaining important knowledge and vital skills to succeed in law enforcement, cadets are challenged mentally, morally, emotionally and physically through their rigorous academy training. It has been almost 10 years since the Sheriff’s Office was able to hire non-employees to enroll at the academy, with the last group of graduates completing the six-month academy in 2007.

Upon completion of the academy, the graduated cadets will join the Sheriff’s Office and partner with a Field Training Officer during a six-month, on-the-job training period. Seven of the cadets graduated from the academy in December 2017. The remaining cadets are expected to graduate in April 2018.

With much anticipation, the Sheriff’s Office will welcome these trained deputies to patrol the streets on their own in late 2018 or early 2019.
