Building a Better Park for All in San Miguel

PictureThe community was invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the expanded San Miguel Community Park in December 2017.
Residents and visitors of San Miguel can enjoy an expanded community park well into the future, thanks to efforts by the County of San Luis Obispo in 2017.

The County Department of Parks and Recreation completed the San Miguel Community Park expansion in December 2017 to accommodate a multi-use turf youth sports field, a multi-use pathway connecting 12th and 13th streets, historic feature enhancements, water-efficient irrigation, a new parking lot, landscaping, and lighting. By expanding the park onto one block of K Street, the County increased the overall safety of park patrons by eliminating the road that previously bisected the park. Now, park patrons can rest easy knowing that vehicles cannot drive through the center of the park.

This $1.5 million project was funded by County Parks and Recreation, along with a $500,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and a $167,000 grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

The community of San Miguel will enjoy the additional recreation amenities and improved safety of the re-designed park.

These improvements will enhance the economic, environmental, and social quality of life in our county by contributing to the revitalization of San Miguel, enhancing, expanding and protecting open space, and providing opportunities for social activities such as community gatherings, traditional celebrations, sports, and outdoor activities.
