Setting the Stage for the Bob Jones Trail Extension

In 2017, the County laid the foundations to extend the Bob Jones City-to-Sea Pathway to San Luis Obispo.
In cooperation with the Land Conservancy of SLO County in September 2017, the County began construction to improve the Octagon Barn site, which will serve as a public trailhead for the Bob Jones Pathway. This will allow the County to extend the existing pathway to southern San Luis Obispo in the future. At the same time, the County created a left turn lane on South Higuera leading into the Octagon Barn site to improve overall roadway safety in this area.
While The Land Conservancy manages the Octagon Barn Center, the County manages the Bob Jones City-to-Sea Pathway. Together, both agencies will enhance the environmental and social quality of life in SLO County by preserving the historic qualities of the site, incorporating native landscaping, protecting water quality, and showcasing these features as an educational demonstration area. This project will draw tourists and locals alike for years to come, which will have a positive impact on the tourism industry and economy in SLO County.
“This has been a labor of love by so many folks devoted to our county's history,” District 3 Supervisor Adam Hill said at the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2017. “And to now see it moving forward as a hub of many practical uses, is like a gift to the community from its past."
The Land Conservancy has already restored the historic Octagon Barn and is planning on adding additional structures to revitalize the site for whole community’s benefit. Once completed, the Octagon Barn Center will be permitted to host 300 events per year including educational tours, corporate and non-profit events, films, dances, weddings, and concerts.
The entire project is estimated to cost about $5.5 million, most of which has been raised through community grants and donations, and partnerships with local businesses and government organizations.
The County and the Land Conservancy have worked collaboratively for many years to develop various segments of the Bob Jones Pathway. The County operates and maintains approximately 2.5-miles of the existing Bob Jones Pathway that spans from the County’s Ontario Road staging area westward to Avila Beach. The County has been working with the Land Conservancy to extend the Bob Jones Pathway from the Ontario Road staging area northward to the Octagon Barn site. This new portion of the Bob Jones Pathway will be approximately 4.4-miles long, and construction is estimated to cost approximately $10 million.
This partnership will ultimately enhance the economic, environmental, and social quality of life in our county by providing recreational site amenities and facilities for education, social gatherings, and outdoor activities while preserving the historic Octagon Barn structure and protecting the site for future generations.
